The Anambra State Police Command has reinforced its Yuletide security operations with the arrest of five suspected fake vigilante operatives accused of robbing residents in Awka under the guise of providing community security.
The suspects were apprehended by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Awkuzu following sustained investigations into reported cases of criminal conspiracy and armed robbery within the Awka metropolis.
The arrest, which took place at Ring Road, Nibo, Awka, led to the recovery of two pump-action guns, five live cartridges, face masks, a vehicle plate number and other incriminating items linked to the suspects’ alleged operations.
Also recovered was an ash-coloured shuttle bus, which police said the suspects allegedly used to patrol neighbourhoods while impersonating vigilante personnel in order to gain the trust of unsuspecting residents.
Police sources revealed that the suspects exploited the guise of community security to carry out their criminal acts, creating fear and confusion among residents while undermining legitimate security efforts.
Those arrested were identified as Solomon Saddah, Okolocha George Kaosisochukwu, John Obi Ogwaju, Chukwuemeka Chisom Ikenwa and Eze Obinna Joshua, all males believed to be part of the same criminal network.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly made confessional statements, admitting their involvement in the crimes and explaining their mode of operation, which relied heavily on deception and impersonation.
The police said the suspects are currently cooperating with investigators, providing information that could help track down other collaborators and dismantle similar criminal networks operating in the state.
Commending the operation, the Anambra State Police Command described it as a significant step toward ensuring a peaceful and crime-free Yuletide, noting that security patrols and intelligence-led operations have been intensified across the state.
The Command urged residents to remain vigilant and to support security agencies with timely and credible information, assuring the public that further updates would be communicated as investigations continue.
