A tragic road accident at Iyana Meiran, along Meiran Road in Lagos, has claimed the lives of two persons and left three others critically injured following a collision involving a Dangote Silo Mixer Truck and several other vehicles.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the fatal incident occurred near the Primary Health Centre, Meiran, throwing the busy corridor into chaos and grief.
Preliminary findings by security operatives indicated that the mixer truck was being driven at a dangerously high speed when it reportedly suffered brake failure, causing the driver to lose control of the heavy-duty vehicle.
The runaway truck rammed into a commercial mini-bus, popularly known as Korope, with registration number EPP 541 YF, before crashing into four tricycles, locally called Marwa.
The affected tricycles were identified by their registration numbers as KTU 360 QN, LND 444 QL, LSR 444 QN, and EKY 122 QP, all of which were extensively damaged in the violent collision.
The impact of the crash led to severe destruction of the vehicles, trapping several commuters amid twisted metal and wreckage at the scene.
LASTMA officials, displaying professionalism and swift emergency response, immediately mobilised to the location to commence rescue operations.
With the support of public-spirited passersby, the traffic officers successfully extricated three critically injured victims who were trapped inside the mangled vehicles.
To prevent further danger and secondary accidents, LASTMA promptly cordoned off the affected corridor and implemented traffic diversion and control measures.
In line with inter-agency emergency protocols, officers of the Meiran Police Division were alerted, with the Divisional Police Officer leading a team to provide security support at the crash site.
The rescue and recovery operation was, however, marred by the disappearance of the driver of the Dangote Silo Mixer Truck, who reportedly fled the scene upon realising the severity of the incident.
The injured victims were rushed to Mobonke Hospital on Meiran Road, where they are currently receiving urgent medical attention.
Meanwhile, the remains of the two deceased victims were handed over to the Nigeria Police, who arranged for their evacuation with an ambulance.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the deceased, while wishing the injured victims a speedy recovery.
He reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property on Lagos roads and warned operators of heavy-duty vehicles against negligence, excessive speeding, and failure to ensure the roadworthiness of their vehicles, stressing that such avoidable lapses continue to claim innocent lives.
