The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has received a high-powered delegation from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) led by its President, Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The meeting, held on Thursday, focused on issues surrounding the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991, and explored ways to foster mutual understanding between the Police and the legal community.
During the deliberations, both parties exchanged views on law enforcement, citizens’ rights, and the rule of law. The IGP emphasized the importance of maintaining public confidence through transparent policing and close cooperation with the Bar.
The Nigerian Police Force clarified that there is currently no subsisting court order restraining the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Act. However, it noted that in deference to public interest and respect for the NBA’s position, it has decided to suspend the enforcement temporarily.
The Force explained that this suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of the hearing of the Motion on Notice scheduled for October 16, 2025, at the Federal High Court, Warri, Delta State.
The temporary halt, according to the Police, reflects its commitment to fairness and to ensuring that the concerns of all stakeholders are properly addressed within the confines of the law.
As part of the resolutions from the meeting, the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Bar Association have jointly inaugurated a Police-NBA Committee.
The committee, according to the statement, will serve as a platform to strengthen collaboration between the Police and the legal profession, particularly in matters relating to law enforcement, rights protection, and justice administration.
IGP Egbetokun expressed optimism that this synergy will deepen mutual trust and improve the interface between law enforcement officers and legal practitioners across the country.
He reiterated the commitment of the Police to act in accordance with the Constitution and uphold the fundamental rights of citizens during the discharge of their duties.
The Police Chief also appealed to motorists and vehicle owners to use the opportunity provided by the suspension period to regularize their vehicle documentation.
He advised all road users to ensure full compliance with existing traffic and vehicle regulations, particularly those guiding the use of shaded or tinted glasses.
According to him, the Force remains determined to enforce all extant laws with integrity, transparency, and due process.
The IGP further assured that the Nigeria Police will continue to engage relevant professional bodies and civic organizations in promoting accountability and respect for the rule of law.
He maintained that effective policing requires strong partnerships and open dialogue with critical stakeholders such as the Nigerian Bar Association.
The statement, signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, anipr, mipra, concluded that the Force Headquarters will keep the public informed on further developments regarding the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Act.
