Tragedy struck on Monday when a fatal road accident at Ibeju Bus Stop along the Lekki–Epe Expressway claimed the lives of six people, leaving nine others injured.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the crash, describing it as a “grievous mishap” involving a blue Volvo FL6 truck loaded with wooden planks and a white commercial bus with registration number AKD 336 YD.
According to LASTMA, the deceased comprised two adult men, three adult women, and a male child. Their bodies were taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) morgue in Epe, pending identification by relatives.
Nine survivors—three men and six women—were rescued from the wreckage and immediately rushed to FMC Epe and Hammond Hospital for emergency treatment. Officials also disclosed that four persons managed to escape unhurt.
The agency said its rescue team worked in concert with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) to evacuate victims and restore order at the accident scene.
Preliminary investigations by security operatives revealed that the crash was caused by reckless driving and excessive speeding, which led to a collision between the truck and the bus.
General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, while condemning what he described as the “persistent menace of reckless motoring practices” on Lagos roads.
He cautioned motorists against speeding, warning that while “speed thrills, it ultimately kills.” He urged drivers to embrace patience, discipline, and defensive driving, particularly during the Ember Months, a period historically linked to increased road crashes.
Bakare-Oki stressed that road accidents are not the result of supernatural forces but are often caused by human recklessness, poor judgment, and disregard for safety rules. He commended the swift intervention of emergency responders, emphasizing that road safety is a shared responsibility.
LASTMA, he added, remains committed to preserving lives, safeguarding property, and maintaining order across Lagos State highways.
