The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved a major round of promotions across the Nigeria Police Force, elevating hundreds of officers to higher ranks in what it described as a merit-driven exercise anchored on professionalism and competence.
The promotion exercise followed rigorous written examinations and oral interviews concluded on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at the Commission’s Corporate Headquarters in Jabi, Abuja. The exercise was presided over by the Chairman of the Commission, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu, mni.
At the apex of the promotions, one Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Usaini Gumel, was elevated to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG). Until his promotion, Gumel served as the AIG in charge of the Community Policing Project Department, Research and Planning at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
In another significant development, the Commission promoted seven Commissioners of Police to the rank of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police. Those elevated include CP Ihebom Chukwuma of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja; CP Maxwell Olatokunbo of the K9 Unit; CP Abaniwonda Olufemi of Delta State Command; CP Alonyenu Francis Idu of Bayelsa State Command; CP Lawal B. Ayodeji of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, FCID Annex Lagos; CP Agene Emmanuel of FCID Kaduna; and CP Vungmoh S. M. Kwaimo of the Railway Command.
The Commission also approved the promotion of thirteen Deputy Commissioners of Police to the substantive rank of Commissioner of Police. Among the new CPs are Babalola Ayodeji Johnson, Ali Umar Fage, Cyril Uche Obiozo, Adepegba K. Adetoye, Tabitha Bako, Ofem Ikpi Arikpo, Edwin Ogbeghagha, Audu Garba Bosso, Samuel Yerima Gimba, Alhaji Mohammed Danladi, Richard Bala Gara, Lasisi Adekunle Titilola, and John Obiuagbaka.
Thirty Assistant Commissioners of Police were also elevated to the rank of Deputy Commissioners of Police. The promoted officers cut across tactical units, Police Mobile Force formations, state commands, and Force Headquarters departments, reflecting the nationwide spread of the exercise.
Similarly, fifty-one Chief Superintendents of Police were promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioners of Police. The beneficiaries include officers serving in divisional, state, and specialized command positions across the country.
In one of the largest segments of the promotion exercise, the Commission approved the elevation of 542 Superintendents of Police to the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police. The promoted officers include commanders, provost officers, divisional crime officers, and unit heads serving in various formations nationwide.
The Commission further promoted 119 Deputy Superintendents of Police to the rank of Superintendent of Police, alongside twelve Assistant Superintendents of Police elevated to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police.
Congratulating the newly promoted officers, the PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), charged them to brace up to the increased responsibilities that come with their new ranks.
He emphasized that promotion is not only a reward for past performance but also a call to higher standards of discipline, professionalism, and dedication to duty.
DIG Argungu urged the officers to recommit themselves to effective policing, the protection of lives and property, and the maintenance of law and order across the country.
He reaffirmed the Commission’s resolve to sustain regular and merit-based promotions in line with global best practices, noting that such measures are essential to boosting morale and strengthening the Nigeria Police Force.
The Commission assured Nigerians that it will continue to support reforms aimed at building a professional, accountable, and people-oriented police institution.
