The former Commissioner of Education in Cross River State, Professor Offiong Effanga Offiong from Calabar South Local Government Area, one of the host Community where University of Calabar is located has emerges the 12th Vice Chancellor of the prestigious second generation University of Calabar after fifty years.

This information was revealed to media practitioners in Calabar by the Public Relations Unit of the institution on weekend to confirm the outcome of the screening process under the Chairmanship of the University Governering Council where he meritoriously emerged as the most qualified to pilots the Affairs of the institution for the next five years with effect from 1st December, 2025.

For the emergents of Professor Offiong, drums are roll out with celebration galore in Calabar South Local Government Area as the once known security risk area became none hostility zone.

Receving the Vice Chancellor designate is the Pro-Chancellor of the institution during the 172nd Council meeting of the institution, expressed gratitude to the new VC and describes the process of his selection as being “peaceful despite the initial hiccups emanating from external elements” who are enemies of the institution.

He also used the opportunity to recommend President Bola Ahemd Tinubu administration for the wisdom to assemble a credible crop of Nigerians to constitutes the Governing Council which he describes as ” wonderful” and wish him for another term in office.

Speaking while appearing before the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the 14th Governing Council of the institution, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Udom Ekpoudom Udom (rtd), Professor Offiong Effanga Offiong commended the Pro-Chancellor for the level playing ground provided to hasten the process for his emergents as the VC designate.

He also used the opportunity to pledge his extreme loyalty to the University Governering Council and Declares his determination to ensure that the institution move forward in the right direction.

On the out going Vice Chancellor of the institution who is the first female Vice Chancellor, Professor Florence Banku Obi, he promises to continue partner with her on consultation of legacy projects she had initiated.

However, it could be recalled that the Calabar Municipal Council Area, another Land-Lord Community to the University had produced a Vice Chancellor in the person of late Professor Bassey Asuquo.
