Security efforts in Anambra State have recorded another significant milestone as police operatives, supported by community security volunteers, arrested a 20-year-old suspect accused of robbery and defilement in Aguata Local Government Area.
The suspect, identified as Chigbo Umeugokwe of Umuezeiyi Village, Achina, was apprehended on 11 November 2025 following days of coordinated intelligence gathering and community-led surveillance.
Police authorities say Umeugokwe is linked to a disturbing attack that took place on 29 October 2025 within the same community.
On the day of the incident, the suspect reportedly invaded a shop armed with a locally made single-barrel gun and a small axe, instilling fear in the shop owner and nearby residents.
Investigators revealed that in an attempt to conceal his identity, he fashioned a red polo shirt into a face mask before launching the attack.
During the operation, the suspect allegedly abducted a 13-year-old girl from the shop and forced her into a nearby bush.
It was in the bush, police say, that he forcefully and unlawfully had carnal knowledge of the minor.
Beyond the physical and emotional harm suffered by the young victim, the suspect also reportedly stole ₦30,000 from the shop before fleeing the scene.
The incident sparked outrage within the community and prompted an immediate call for intensified security patrols in the area.
The breakthrough came through the combined efforts of officers attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Gender Unit, Awka, and the vigilant local security network.
Following his arrest, Umeugokwe was subjected to interrogation, during which he made a voluntary confessional statement detailing his involvement in the act.
The police also recovered crucial exhibits believed to have been used during the crime.
According to the Command, the items recovered include a locally made single-barrel gun, a small axe, and the red polo shirt converted into a face mask.
Police spokesperson, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, described the arrest as a strong affirmation of the effectiveness of police-community partnership in tackling crime.
He noted that the collaboration not only fast-tracked the arrest but also reinforced public confidence in the state’s criminal justice system.
The suspect is scheduled to be arraigned in court on Wednesday, 19 November 2025, marking the next phase in the pursuit of justice for the teenage victim.
SP Tochukwu reiterated the Command’s commitment to ensuring that offenders are held accountable, especially in cases involving vulnerable persons.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue to provide actionable information that can assist law enforcement in keeping communities safe.
The Anambra Police Command emphasized that it will sustain its ongoing efforts to strengthen security across all local government areas.
The Command also commended the local community security outfit for its swift response and cooperation during the investigation.
As the case proceeds to court, the police assure the public that every legal step will be taken to secure justice and prevent similar incidents in the future.
