The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, has announced the cancellation of its much-anticipated 2025 Carol Service.
This solemn decision comes in the wake of the recent passing of two notable personalities deeply connected to the Union: Comrade Akinola Ariyo, a respected journalist, and Mr. John Ajayi, an employer of labour whose contributions significantly shaped the growth of the NUJ.
In a statement signed by Chairman Adeleye Ajayi and Secretary Tunde Olalere, the Union explained that the decision is a mark of deep respect and honour for the departed.
“The Union remains in mourning over this painful loss,” the statement read, “and it is only fitting to suspend all celebratory activities during this period.”
Members of the NUJ Lagos State Council are called upon to devote this period to reflection, prayers, and the remembrance of the legacies left behind by the late Comrade Ariyo and Mr. Ajayi.
Comrade Akinola Ariyo was widely celebrated for his dedication to journalism, mentoring younger reporters, and upholding the principles of integrity and professionalism in the media industry.
Mr. John Ajayi, on the other hand, was recognized for his unwavering support of media professionals and his notable contributions to labour welfare and the advancement of the Union.
The leadership of the NUJ Lagos Council emphasized the importance of continuing to uphold the values exemplified by the departed – dedication, service, and commitment to the profession.
The Union also encouraged all members to keep the late journalist and employer in their prayers, praying for the peaceful repose of their souls.
May the memories of Comrade Akinola Ariyo and Mr. John Ajayi continue to inspire members of the NUJ and the broader journalism community.
