The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, has cancelled its 2025 Carol Service in a solemn gesture of respect for two departed personalities whose lives touched the Union and the journalism community.
The decision, announced by the leadership of the Council, followed the passing of Comrade Akinola Ariyo, a respected Lagos-based journalist, and Mr. John Ajayi, an employer of labour noted for his support and contributions to the NUJ.
According to the Union, the cancellation was a deliberate and symbolic act aimed at honouring the memories of the deceased and recognising their enduring impact on the Council.
Comrade Akinola Ariyo was described as a committed professional who served journalism with passion, integrity, and an uncommon sense of responsibility.
Colleagues recall him as a unionist who consistently stood for fairness, professionalism, and the welfare of journalists across Lagos State.
Mr. John Ajayi, on the other hand, was acknowledged for his role as an employer of labour whose encouragement and material support contributed meaningfully to the growth and stability of the NUJ.
His relationship with the Union, members said, went beyond obligation and was driven by genuine commitment to institutional development.
In a statement, the NUJ Lagos Council said it remains deeply affected by the loss of the two men, describing their deaths as painful and untimely.
The Council noted that proceeding with a celebratory event such as the annual Carol Service would be inappropriate during a period of mourning.
Consequently, all festive activities lined up by the Union for the season have been suspended to allow members reflect on the fragility of life.
The leadership urged journalists across the state to use the period for prayers, quiet reflection, and remembrance of the deceased.
Members were also encouraged to uphold the ideals of dedication, service, and commitment which both Comrade Ariyo and Mr. Ajayi exemplified during their lifetime.
The NUJ Lagos State Council expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and professional associates of the departed.
It reaffirmed its solidarity with them, assuring that the legacies of the deceased would not be forgotten.
The Union concluded with prayers for the peaceful repose of their souls, describing their memories as a guiding light for the journalism community in Lagos State.
