The National Orientation Agency (NOA) is intensifying efforts to support the Federal Government’s environmental sanitation initiative, emphasizing its alignment with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6. This goal advocates for the sustainable management of water and sanitation for all, which remains a key focus for public health in local communities.
In a recent meeting with community members and Community Orientation and Mobilization Officers (COMOs) from all 31 Local Government Areas, Mr. Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, the State Director of NOA, spoke to news reporters, highlighting the crucial role of environmental sanitation in maintaining public health. He described the initiative as a comprehensive strategy that addresses waste management, access to clean water, and the promotion of sanitary living environments.
“Environmental sanitation is at the heart of protecting human health and well-being. It goes beyond keeping our surroundings clean; it involves the proper management of waste, ensuring access to safe drinking water, and maintaining sanitary conditions,” Mkpoutom said.
He emphasized that community-driven sanitation efforts are integral to reducing disease transmission and improving overall living conditions.
The State Director explained that environmental sanitation involves a variety of measures, including proper disposal and management of both solid and liquid waste, which is essential in preventing pollution and ensuring that communities have access to clean water.
He added that effective wastewater management is key to mitigating the risk of diseases and safeguarding public health.
Mkpoutom urged residents to take collective responsibility for maintaining cleanliness within their homes, neighborhoods, and public spaces.
He warned that neglecting sanitation could lead to the proliferation of disease-causing pathogens, as well as the spread of illnesses carried by vectors like mosquitoes and rodents.
In addition, the State Director called on COMOs to organize educational workshops and community seminars to inform residents about the importance of sanitation and the dangers associated with improper waste disposal.
He emphasized that through public education and engagement, communities can become active participants in the nationwide push for better environmental health practices.
The NOA’s continued advocacy for better environmental sanitation is an important step toward achieving SDG 6, ensuring that all Nigerians benefit from cleaner, healthier, and safer living environments.
