Nigerians have been urged to take note of what the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has described as a disturbing development involving officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The party expressed concern over reports that some INEC headquarters officials allegedly attended an illegal National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting convened by the Dr. Ahmed Ajuji–led group, which the party insists is a defunct National Working Committee (NWC).
According to the NNPP, this action is in clear violation of a subsisting order of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, presided over by Honourable Justice Kawu. The court had expressly restrained INEC from dealing with, transacting with, or recognising the Dr. Ahmed Ajuji–led faction pending the determination of an ongoing judicial review.
The party warned that any engagement with the said group amounts to a disregard for the rule of law and a direct affront to the authority of the court.
NNPP stated that it is deeply troubling that such an alleged development could occur despite the clarity of the court order, stressing that respect for judicial decisions is fundamental to Nigeria’s democracy.
The party further expressed hope that the newly appointed INEC Chairman would demonstrate greater commitment to the rule of law and constitutional order than his predecessor, especially in politically sensitive matters.
NNPP called on civil society organisations, democracy advocates, and concerned Nigerians to closely monitor the situation and resist what it described as avoidable institutional impunity.
The party warned that failure to adhere to the court’s directive may compel affected parties to initiate contempt proceedings against those involved.
NNPP reaffirmed its commitment to lawful processes and urged all stakeholders to allow the judiciary to conclude the matter without interference or undue influence.
The party maintained that democracy can only thrive where institutions respect court orders and act within the confines of the law.
