Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB, has been transferred from DSS custody in Abuja to a correctional facility in Sokoto State, his lawyer Aloy Ejimakor confirmed Thursday. “So far away from his lawyers, family, loved ones and well-wishers,” Ejimakor said, highlighting the isolation.
The move follows Kanu’s life sentence handed down by a Federal High Court in Abuja earlier this week after he was found guilty on terrorism charges related to secessionist activities and his broadcasts via Radio Biafra.
The court had considered the death penalty but opted for life imprisonment. Kanu’s relocation to Sokoto is seen as a security measure, ensuring he is held in a high-security facility far from Abuja.
Supporters have expressed alarm, viewing the transfer as an added layer of isolation, while authorities insist the move is necessary to prevent unrest and secure the prison environment.
