The Nigerian Maritime Law Association (NMLA) has elected a new Executive Committee to pilot its affairs, following the conclusion of its 16th Annual General Meeting held on Saturday, November 15, 2025.
The election, which took place in Lagos, produced a new leadership team that will oversee the Association’s mandate of strengthening maritime law practice in Nigeria.
Mr. Mike Igbokwe, SAN, FCArb, FBR, emerged as the new President of the Association after a successful ballot by members.
Professor Adewale Adedamola Olawoyin, SAN, FCIArb, was elected as the 1st Vice President, taking on a key role in supporting the strategic direction of the NMLA.
Dr. Emeka Akabogu, SAN, was elected as the 2nd Vice President, further strengthening the Association’s leadership bench with his experience in maritime advisory and policy.
The position of Honorary Secretary went to Mrs. Nneka Obianyor, FCIArb, who will coordinate administrative functions and documentation for the NMLA.
Mr. ‘Nonso Azih was chosen as the Assistant Secretary, reinforcing the administrative arm of the Association’s operations.
Chief Omolola Ikwuagwu was elected Treasurer and will be responsible for overseeing the Association’s financial governance.
The role of Financial Secretary was assigned to Ms. Kashimana Tsumba, who will support the management of revenues and financial reporting.
Mrs. Mojisola Jaiye-Gbenle emerged as the Publicity Secretary and will be responsible for communication and stakeholder engagement.
Members of the NMLA congratulated the new Executive Committee, describing the team as competent and capable of driving the Association forward.
The Association expressed confidence that the newly elected leaders will sustain its tradition of championing maritime legal reform in Nigeria.
It said the new leadership is expected to build on the progress made in enhancing the unification, development and administration of maritime law.
The AGM also reaffirmed the NMLA’s commitment to its affiliation with the Comité Maritime International (CMI), a global body dedicated to harmonizing maritime laws.
The Association encouraged members of the public and industry stakeholders to support the new Executive Committee as it begins its tenure.
