His appointment, announced last week by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, comes amid the nationwide transfer of all Police Public Relations Officers at the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP). DSP Babaseyi succeeds CSP Omolola Odutola, whose tenure was praised for professionalism, transparency, and approachability.
CSP Odutola has been transferred to the Lagos State Police Command for higher national responsibilities, leaving behind a legacy that has set high expectations for the new PPRO. The baton has now passed to DSP Babaseyi, a seasoned officer with a formidable track record.
A Barrister-at-Law and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, DSP Babaseyi brings a strong legal foundation to policing. He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano, and a Diploma in Law from Osun State University, reflecting a blend of legal expertise and law enforcement training.
He is also a distinguished member of the 1st Regular Course of the Nigeria Police Academy, a program renowned for producing officers with exceptional operational and administrative acumen. This background positions him well to manage both the strategic and communicative demands of his new role.
DSP Babaseyi has served in several operational and investigative capacities across Nigeria. His early assignments included Divisional Crime Officer at Monatan and Kajorepo Divisions, and Officer-in-Charge of Ilaji and Lagelu Police Posts in Oyo State, where he supervised investigations and personnel, and coordinated local crime prevention efforts.
His operational experience was further strengthened during a three-year deployment with the Police Mobile Force (22 PMF) as Unit Commander. This tenure exposed him to high-pressure situations, requiring swift decision-making and strategic oversight.
In 2023, DSP Babaseyi trained at the Nigeria Army School of Special Forces, Buni Yadi, enhancing his tactical and operational skills. He subsequently led personnel in joint military operations under Operation Hadin Kai across Yobe and Borno States, demonstrating adaptability and leadership in challenging security environments.
Beyond frontline operations, DSP Babaseyi has built a strong record in police administration and public relations. He previously served as Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, gaining experience in media management and public engagement.
He also served as Secretary to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, where he was involved in strategic planning, inter-agency coordination, and overall command management. These roles have prepared him to handle the complex communication needs of the Ogun State Police Command.
