The Chief of Naval Staff on Wednesday visited properties linked to a former head of the Nigerian Navy amid an escalating dispute over ownership and inheritance rights.
The visit, conducted alongside senior naval officer A.M. Yaremi, drew attention to ongoing tensions surrounding the contested lands.
According to naval sources, the inspection took place early in the morning under tight security.
The properties in question are reportedly being targeted for seizure by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, in what observers describe as part of a wider conflict over inheritance and official authority.
Neither the Navy nor the minister’s office has issued a formal statement about the visit.
Officials familiar with the situation said the Chief of Naval Staff’s presence at the site signaled an effort to ascertain the facts surrounding the ownership claims.
The properties are believed to have belonged to a former Chief of Naval Staff, whose name was not immediately released.
Sources close to the family said the land has been the subject of a long-running dispute involving multiple parties.
The conflict reportedly intensified after FCT authorities moved to assert control over the area, citing alleged irregularities in the acquisition process.
Supporters of the former naval chief’s family insist the properties were legally obtained and form part of a private inheritance.
Minister Wike, who has faced criticism over several land recovery drives in Abuja, has not publicly commented on this specific case.
Security personnel were seen accompanying the Chief of Naval Staff and Yaremi during the visit, witnesses told AFP.
The trip, they said, lasted less than an hour and included briefings from naval and local officials.
Analysts say the incident could deepen tensions between federal institutions and highlight the recurring disputes over land ownership in the Nigerian capital.
As of Wednesday evening, the Navy had yet to issue an official clarification regarding the purpose and outcome of the visit.
