The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mallam Shehu Mohammed, has been honoured with the 2025 Road Safety Champion Award by the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP).
The award was presented during the NAOSNP National Conference and Awards held recently in Lagos, in recognition of Mohammed’s transformative initiatives in road transportation safety and his commitment to promoting safer road environments in Nigeria.
In his remarks at the event, NAOSNP National President, Mayor Oki Samson, highlighted the growing responsibility of the media—particularly online security news outlets—in shaping public understanding and national resilience amid complex security threats and misinformation.
Mayor Oki emphasized the vital role of the press in national security discourse and called for deeper collaboration between media and security agencies to ensure accurate, timely, and responsible reporting.
He described the event as not only a dialogue but a partnership between those safeguarding the nation and those shaping public opinion, urging awardees to continue serving the nation with zeal and patriotism.
In his keynote address, the former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, represented by Air Vice Marshal Bashir Rimi Mamman, stressed the importance of unity, responsible journalism, and collective action in securing Nigeria’s future.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone 2 Lagos, Adegoke Fayoade, addressed the conference theme, “Securing and Safeguarding Nigeria’s Economic Resources,” highlighting the interplay between security and economic development.
AIG Fayoade noted that protecting economic resources—whether tangible infrastructure or intangible systems like revenue flows and investor confidence—requires integrated, multi-sectoral approaches.
“As Nigeria continues to aim for growth, investment, and resource optimisation, the link between security and economy remains central,” he said.
The award was received on behalf of Corps Marshal Mohammed by the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat.
Speaking on the occasion, Corps Marshal Mohammed stressed the critical role of roads in national transportation, noting that road traffic crashes significantly disrupt supply chains and increase operational costs.
He assured that the FRSC would continue enforcing transportation safety laws and reforms in line with government efforts to improve infrastructure and combat corruption in the sector.
Mohammed also called on the media to raise awareness on road safety issues, hold stakeholders accountable, and report professionally to build trust and integrity. He dedicated the award to FRSC personnel for their hard work.
Other dignitaries at the event included representatives of the former Chief of Defence Staff, the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and various security agency officials.
The conference also recognised the FRSC Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, as the NAOSNP “Best Security Agency Spokesperson of the Year.”
Over the years, the NAOSNP National Security Conference/Awards has become the largest media-organized security event, attracting top public and private stakeholders in Nigeria’s security architecture.
