In a bid to enhance professionalism, digital safety, and ethical reporting among media practitioners, the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP) has announced its One-Day Workshop for Media Practitioners, scheduled to hold tomorrow, Thursday, October 16, 2025.
The event, which will bring together journalists, public relations experts, and security communicators, is themed “Securing and Safeguarding Journalists’ Freedom: How to Avoid the Pitfalls of Cybercrime.” It will also explore a sub-theme titled “Combating Corruption and Other Vices in Public Service: The Role of Online Journalists.”
According to the organisers, the workshop is part of NAOSNP’s ongoing commitment to promoting responsible journalism, integrity in reportage, and collaboration between the media and law enforcement agencies. The association noted that the digital era has expanded the boundaries of news dissemination, but also exposed journalists to new risks, including cybercrime, misinformation, and defamation pitfalls.
The one-day capacity-building event will hold at the LCCI Expo & Conference Center, located at 10 Nurudeen Olowopopo Street, Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja, Lagos. The session is expected to begin at 10 a.m., with registration opening an hour earlier for participants.
A major highlight of the programme will be the keynote address to be delivered by CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Force Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, who will speak on media-security relations and the fine line between press freedom and the law.
Also delivering a keynote presentation is Dr. Demola Bakare, fsi, Director of the Public Enlightenment and Education Department of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). He is expected to examine the ethical responsibilities of journalists in combating corruption and strengthening transparency in public service.
Other notable facilitators include Dr. Tokunbo Modupe, Chairman of TPT International, who will speak on image management and public trust in media communications. His presentation will focus on how journalists can maintain credibility in the face of sensationalism and social media pressures.
Equally on the speakers’ list is Dr. Kunle Hamilton, a seasoned media trainer and reputation specialist, who will share insights on storytelling techniques, media responsibility, and the importance of self-discipline in journalism practice.
Public relations and corporate communication experts will also take the stage, including Faleye Oluwatosin Simon, PR Consultant to Wema Bank, who will discuss the interface between journalism, corporate image, and ethics in brand storytelling.
From the public service sector, ACN M. Abdullah, the Public Relations Officer of the NDLEA Lagos Command, and SRC Oluwadamilola Jayeola, the Public Relations Officer of the FRSC Lagos Sector Command, will lead interactive sessions on the role of institutional communication in national development.
Participants will not only gain practical knowledge but also enjoy a rich networking environment. According to the organisers, the event will feature free certificates for attendees, refreshments, and opportunities for professional collaboration among media stakeholders.
Speaking ahead of the event, a NAOSNP representative noted that the workshop aims to “bridge the gap between press freedom and legal responsibility,” stressing that journalists must understand how to operate safely and ethically in the digital space.
He added that the initiative is a call to action for media practitioners to resist misinformation, uphold accountability, and support anti-corruption efforts through investigative and fact-based reporting.
The association expressed optimism that the training will help online journalists navigate the legal, moral, and professional challenges of modern-day reporting, while deepening their understanding of cyber laws and digital rights.
As preparations reach their peak, excitement continues to build among members of the press and communication professionals across Lagos and beyond. Many view the workshop as a timely intervention in an era where information travels fast — and responsibility must travel faster.
