The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), widely regarded as one of the most versatile labour unions in the country, brought the year 2025 to a colourful close with its End-of-Year Get-Together, a celebration dedicated to recognising outstanding staff performance and strengthening internal solidarity.
The event, held at the union’s headquarters, was marked by a festive atmosphere as staff members gathered to reflect on the year’s achievements and milestones. Traditional drums rolled steadily in the background, setting a lively tone for the celebration, while a generous spread of food and assorted drinks added to the excitement of the occasion.
The highlight of the gathering was the presentation of awards to deserving administrative staff who distinguished themselves through dedication, discipline, and commitment to duty throughout the outgoing year. In all, 10 administrative workers were honoured across various performance-based categories.
Top among the awardees was Comrade Taofeek Adeleke, fondly known as “Dudu,” who emerged as the Best Overall Staff of the Year. His outstanding work ethic and consistency earned him the union’s highest staff honour, accompanied by a cash reward of ₦100,000.
Another key category recognised punctuality and dedication to duty at the headquarters. In the Senior Cadre category, the award for punctuality was won by Comrade John, the Deputy Secretary General (Administration), whose commitment to time management stood out during the year.
In the Junior Cadre category, the award went to John Kessy, a chief driver, who was commended for his reliability, discipline, and professionalism in carrying out his responsibilities.
Comrade Rotimi Adesunmbo, Assistant Secretary General (Dock), also received recognition for his contributions, reflecting the union’s resolve to reward excellence across all operational levels.
The event also celebrated style and professionalism, with Comrade Kenneth Ibanga, Comrade Mistura Adesina, and Akuchi Jane Nneji emerging as Best Dressed Staff, a category that added a light-hearted but competitive flair to the ceremony.
In addition, several staff members received special mentions for their dedication and consistent support of the union’s activities. Those recognised include Comrade Funke Apesin, Comrade Joseph Ekwere, Comrade Adele Matthew, and Sherif Ogbeide.
Union leaders used the occasion to commend the entire workforce for their resilience and teamwork in 2025, noting that the achievements recorded during the year were made possible by the collective effort of staff across all departments.
The End-of-Year Get-Together not only served as a reward system but also as a morale booster, reinforcing MWUN’s commitment to staff welfare, motivation, and excellence.
As the celebrations drew to a close, staff members expressed appreciation to the leadership of the union for recognising hard work and fostering a culture of encouragement, unity, and professionalism within the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria.
