The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a lone-vehicle crash at the Lekki Toll Gate inward Sand-Field corridor, which left five passengers with grievous injuries.
The incident involved a Mazda commercial bus with registration number KRD 412 XR, which reportedly veered out of control and crashed into toll gate media infrastructure.
Preliminary findings by LASTMA indicated that the crash was caused by excessive speed compounded by a sudden mechanical brake failure, leading to loss of control by the driver.
All occupants of the vehicle, including the driver, sustained varying degrees of serious injuries as a result of the violent impact.
LASTMA officials said their operatives were swiftly deployed to the scene, where they secured the area and coordinated rescue operations to prevent further danger to road users.
Two critically injured passengers were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital by public-spirited individuals, while the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) evacuated the remaining three victims, including the driver, for urgent medical attention.
Security support was provided by officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), who ensured orderliness at the scene and prevented secondary accidents during the rescue and evacuation process.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed concern over the recurring incidence of speed-related crashes on major roads across the state.
Bakare-Oki commiserated with the victims and wished them a speedy and full recovery, while reaffirming LASTMA’s commitment to the protection of lives and property on Lagos roads.
He cautioned motorists, especially commercial vehicle operators, against excessive speeding and the use of poorly maintained vehicles, stressing that adherence to traffic rules, moderation of speed and routine vehicle maintenance remain critical to accident prevention.
LASTMA urged all road users to embrace responsible driving habits and cooperate with traffic authorities to ensure safer and more orderly roadways across Lagos State.
