The Lagos State Government has announced the commencement of the second phase of rehabilitation works on the Ogudu–Ifako Bridge in Kosofe Local Government Area, following the successful completion and reopening of the first phase.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed that the project will commence on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, and is expected to last until Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
According to him, the second phase will focus on the full restoration of the bridge’s expansion joints inbound Lagos Island, a critical intervention necessary to safeguard road users and preserve the structure’s long-term integrity.
Anticipating disruptions to vehicular flow, the government has designed a comprehensive traffic diversion plan to minimize inconvenience and sustain mobility across the affected axis.
Mr. Bakare-Oki explained that motorists traveling along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway and Lagos Toll Gate inbound Oshodi and Victoria Island will face a controlled diversion at the Ogudu–Ifako Bridge. Traffic will be streamlined into a single lane about 50 metres before the construction zone and restored to full capacity 50 metres after.
For motorists heading to Oshodi, he advised taking the Ojota Slip Road, which links directly to Ikorodu Road inbound Anthony, near the Taxi Park.
Similarly, motorists bound for Victoria Island may use the Ojota Slip Road, join Ikorodu Road inbound Anthony by Town Planning Way, then connect through Gbagada to access the Third Mainland Bridge and Lagos Island.
Another alternative route, he said, is through Ikorodu Road inbound Funsho Williams Avenue, offering direct entry into Lagos Island via Eko Bridge.
Motorists originating from Ikeja and adjoining areas are encouraged to pass through Maryland, connect Ikorodu Road/Funsho Williams Avenue, and proceed via Eko Bridge to Outer Marina and other locations. Alternatively, they may link Ikorodu Road inbound Anthony and continue through Oshodi.
The LASTMA boss assured Lagosians that operatives had been strategically deployed across the affected routes to ensure traffic fluidity, enforce lane discipline, and provide rapid response to emergencies.
He appealed for maximum cooperation from motorists, stressing that strict compliance with the traffic advisory and instructions from LASTMA officers will be critical to maintaining order during the rehabilitation exercise.
“Motorists are profoundly enjoined to exercise patience, prudence, and civic obligation, as the partial closure of the bridge represents a vital component of the State’s overarching traffic management architecture designed to deliver enduring infrastructural dividends for the collective wellbeing of Lagosians,” he said.
Bakare-Oki added that towing vehicles and other traffic equipment had been stationed along diversion routes and intersections to promptly handle breakdowns, accidents, or other emergencies.
He praised motorists for their cooperation during the first phase of the rehabilitation works and urged them to maintain discipline throughout the second phase.
The public was also encouraged to report incidents and emergencies via LASTMA’s hotline: 080000527862. He warned that any motorist found driving against traffic, flouting traffic laws, or engaging in reckless indiscipline would be prosecuted before the Lagos State Mobile Court.
