In a dramatic showdown on the night of 20th February 2026, Kebbi State Police successfully repelled an armed bandit attack along the Maje border, authorities confirmed yesterday.
The attackers, believed to be members of the notorious Lakurawa criminal network, reportedly attempted to use a herd of cattle as cover, exploiting darkness to mask their approach.
At approximately 2145 hours, well-prepared operatives from the Police Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) engaged the assailants in a swift counter-operation that forced them to retreat.
Despite some temporary security structures sustaining damage, police confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries among personnel or civilians.
“The alertness and preparedness of our operatives prevented a potential tragedy,” said a senior officer at the Kebbi State Police Command.
Following the encounter, security along the Maje border has been significantly reinforced, ensuring calm and full control of the area.
Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Mohammed Hadeija, psc, MNIM, addressed the public, warning against the dangers of night grazing and the risks it poses to both herders and the wider community.
“Night movement of cattle can be exploited by criminals,” CP Hadeija stated. “We urge herders to adopt safer practices and avoid actions that could make them vulnerable.”
The police further emphasized that any unlawful activity or suspicious movement associated with night grazing would be met with firm and lawful action.
SP Bashir Usman Anisma, Police Public Relations Officer, called on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or security formation.
Authorities noted that the Lakurawa network has previously exploited routine activities, including livestock movement, to carry out attacks, making community awareness vital.
Increased patrols and proactive monitoring have been deployed along vulnerable routes and border areas to deter future criminal attempts.
Community leaders have been urged to work closely with security agencies, ensuring that herders follow recommended safety measures and report suspicious gatherings promptly.
The incident underscores the ongoing challenges of banditry in Kebbi State, highlighting the need for constant vigilance, particularly in border communities.
