The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old woman, identified as Maryam Atiku of Nasarawa area in Kamba, Dandi Local Government Area, for allegedly attempting to kill her newborn baby girl by burying her alive.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on June 25, 2025, shortly after Maryam gave birth to the child. Instead of seeking help, she allegedly tied three wrappers around the baby’s neck, covered her mouth, and took her to Malam Yaro bush, where she dug a shallow hole and buried the infant alive.
The following day, June 26, around 12:30 p.m., a farmer, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad, who was working on his farm near the area, noticed disturbed soil that looked like a fresh grave. Suspicious of the sight, he raised an alarm that drew villagers to the scene.
Together, the community members dug up the site and were shocked to discover the baby still alive. The infant was rushed to General Hospital, Kamba, where doctors provided immediate medical attention and later confirmed her condition as stable.
The matter was promptly reported to the police, and detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Birnin Kebbi, launched an investigation. The suspect was subsequently arrested and, during interrogation, confessed to the crime.
Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M. Sani, condemned the incident in strong terms, describing it as a clear case of child abuse and attempted infanticide. He reiterated the Command’s commitment to a zero-tolerance stance against child exploitation, abuse, and gender-based violence in the state.
The police boss further called on parents, guardians, and community leaders to prioritize the safety and welfare of children in their care. He urged them to resist compromising children’s future under the pretext of poverty or other pressures.
The Command also commended the timely intervention of Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad, whose vigilance saved the child’s life, as well as the support of the wife of the Kebbi State Governor, Hajia Zainab Nasare Nasir Idris, for stepping in to ensure the welfare of the rescued baby.
Police said the suspect has already been charged in court, where she faces prosecution for her actions. Authorities believe the case will serve as a deterrent to others who may attempt similar crimes.
The Kebbi State Police Command reassured residents of its unwavering determination to protect the most vulnerable members of society while promising that justice will be pursued in this tragic case.
