The usually quiet town of Garko in Kano State erupted into chaos this week after a suspected case of culpable homicide triggered mob violence that left property destroyed, officers injured, and one person dead.
The incident, which began as a lawful police investigation, quickly spiraled out of control when an angry crowd stormed the Garko Police Division, disrupting official operations and demanding instant justice.
According to the Kano State Police Command, the drama started on Thursday, September 4, when a homicide case was reported in the local government area. Detectives swung into action, leading to the arrest of three suspects the following day.
The suspects, picked up by operatives from Wudil Area Command, were brought to Garko Division for questioning. But before investigators could conclude their preliminary interrogation, news of the arrests spread, drawing a large and restless crowd to the station.
Witnesses said the mob, armed with sticks and stones, marched angrily towards the police facility, insisting that the suspects must not be allowed to escape justice. Their protest soon descended into violence.
In the ensuing melee, the mob overpowered security at the gate, hurling missiles at the station and attempting to force their way in. Officers on duty tried to repel them, but the crowd grew larger and more aggressive.
By the time calm briefly returned, the station’s patrol vehicle had been set ablaze. Three vehicles belonging to Hisbah and Garko Local Government Council were also destroyed. Windows of the Divisional headquarters were shattered in the rampage.
Three police officers who stood their ground in defending the station sustained injuries during the attack. They were later rushed to Wudil Hospital, where doctors confirmed that they were responding positively to treatment.
Tragedy, however, struck when a burning tyre reportedly burst and struck one of the frontline attackers. The impact was fatal, killing him instantly, while three others sustained varying degrees of injuries in the chaos.
The shocking development prompted immediate action from the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, who ordered containment measures to stabilize the situation. Stakeholder engagements with community leaders were also swiftly initiated.
Within hours, security operatives regained control of the area, dispersing the mob and restoring public order. The Divisional headquarters, though scarred by the attack, resumed normal operations.
Police later confirmed that nine suspects had been arrested in connection with the mob action. Investigations, however, remain ongoing to track down other instigators and participants who managed to flee during the raid.
In a strongly worded warning, the Kano Police Command cautioned residents against taking laws into their own hands, stressing that mob justice undermines the rule of law and threatens the safety of communities.
“The law is clear,” a senior police officer remarked. “Every grievance must be channeled through the proper authorities. Violence only breeds more violence, and innocent people are often caught in the crossfire.”
Reassuring residents, CP Bakori emphasized the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property while ensuring that justice is served in the homicide case. He called on citizens to remain calm, cooperate with investigators, and avoid acts capable of plunging Garko—or any other community—into unrest.
For now, Garko remains on edge, but the heavy presence of security personnel and the firm assurances of the Police Command appear to have restored a fragile calm. Many residents are still counting their losses, even as they await the outcome of investigations that could reshape the town’s sense of security.
