The Kano State Police Command welcomed renowned climate advocacy cyclist and environmental activist, Mr. Edidiong Etefia, to its Bompai headquarters on Tuesday.
Mr. Etefia, founder of the Emergency Action on Climate Change Initiative, is on a solo bicycle tour across Nigeria aimed at raising awareness on climate change and inspiring communities to take action.
The climate advocate was received by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, DCP Lawal Mani, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.
During the visit, Mr. Etefia planted a tree at the police headquarters, symbolizing the Command’s commitment to environmental sustainability and green initiatives.
Speaking to journalists and police officers, Mr. Etefia said his journey is designed to spark dialogue, connect communities, and promote collective responsibility for protecting the planet.
“My mission is to engage people, educate them on climate change, and show that small actions, like planting a tree, can contribute to solving bigger environmental challenges,” he explained.
DCP Lawal Mani expressed appreciation for Mr. Etefia’s dedication, noting that the Nigeria Police Force can play a critical role in advancing climate justice nationwide.
“The Force, under the leadership of IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, is leading by example through the Nigeria Police Green Initiative,” DCP Mani said.
He added that the initiative aims to integrate innovative green solutions into policing operations, enhancing efficiency while reducing environmental impact.
The Deputy Commissioner emphasized the link between climate action and security, pointing out that environmental degradation often intensifies societal vulnerabilities.
“By embracing sustainability, the police set a standard for the communities we serve, encouraging everyone to adopt eco-friendly practices,” DCP Mani said.
Mr. Etefia expressed optimism about working with law enforcement agencies, highlighting that institutional support can amplify the impact of awareness campaigns.
The Kano State Police Command also plans to extend its climate advocacy efforts to schools, youth groups, and community organizations, further promoting environmental consciousness.
Commissioner of Police Bakori reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to supporting climate initiatives and ensuring that sustainability becomes a core component of operational strategy.
Through tree planting and ongoing partnerships, Kano State Police are demonstrating that environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility, setting an example for other security agencies across Nigeria.
