The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, OFR, has underscored the indispensable role of logistics and transport systems in driving national security, economic stability, and sustainable development. He made this assertion while addressing stakeholders at the 2025 Annual National Conference of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Nigeria held in Lagos.
The high-profile event, themed “Enhancing Logistics and Transport for Sustainable Blue Economy,” attracted leaders from the military, maritime, transport, and logistics sectors, alongside policymakers and experts from across the country. The discussions focused on strategies to strengthen Nigeria’s logistics framework as a critical driver of the emerging Blue Economy agenda.
Describing the gathering as a “prestigious platform,” Gen. Musa commended CILT Nigeria for consistently championing professionalism and innovation in the logistics and transport industry. He praised the Institute for creating an avenue where experts converge to share knowledge and explore sustainable solutions for the nation’s transportation challenges.
In his goodwill message, the Defence Chief lauded CILT’s foresight and its sustained efforts in bridging the gap between stakeholders from diverse sectors of the economy. According to him, the Institute’s contribution to logistics education, research, and professional development continues to make a tangible impact on Nigeria’s growth trajectory.
He emphasized that logistics and transport remain at the heart of economic diversification, infrastructure expansion, and industrial competitiveness. “These systems are the arteries that connect every aspect of our national life,” he said. “Without efficient logistics, no economy, no matter how resource-endowed, can function effectively.”
Gen. Musa noted that the conference theme aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to sustainable development and security sector reforms. He observed that the Blue Economy initiative, if supported by efficient transport and logistics systems, could unlock vast opportunities in trade, maritime operations, and employment generation.
Highlighting the synergy between logistics and security, the Defence Chief remarked that national resilience is built on robust supply chains and transport networks. “The nexus between logistics, transport, and national security cannot be overemphasized,” he stated. “They form the backbone of both economic activity and military capability.”
He explained that for the Armed Forces of Nigeria, logistics serves as the lifeline of operational success. From troop movement to supply of essential equipment and humanitarian response, logistics coordination determines the outcome of every mission. “No military campaign, regardless of its brilliance in planning, can succeed without reliable logistics,” he asserted.
Gen. Musa revealed that the Nigerian military continues to prioritize logistics training through specialized institutions such as the Nigerian Army College of Logistics and Management. These initiatives, he said, are designed to produce skilled logisticians capable of supporting joint operations in complex and dynamic environments.
He further acknowledged CILT Nigeria’s partnership in aligning military logistics education with international best practices, adding that such collaborations are crucial in enhancing defence readiness and overall national resilience.
In recognition of his remarkable contributions to national security and leadership excellence, the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport conferred on Gen. Musa the Distinguished Leadership Excellence Award. The audience erupted in applause as the Defence Chief received the honour with humility and gratitude.
Accepting the award, Gen. Musa dedicated the recognition to the men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces who continue to serve the nation with courage and honour. “This award is not for me alone,” he said, “it belongs to every officer and soldier who defends our nation’s unity and sovereignty with unwavering dedication.”
He called for deeper collaboration between the military, government institutions, and logistics professionals to create a transport system that fosters inclusive growth and strengthens national integration. According to him, strategic partnerships would be instrumental in tackling emerging challenges in infrastructure, technology, and global supply chain dynamics.
“As we look toward the future,” he added, “sustainable logistics and transport systems are not merely about moving goods—they are about connecting people, unlocking opportunities, and building resilience for generations to come.”
Gen. Musa concluded his address with commendation for CILT Nigeria’s steadfast role in shaping the nation’s logistics landscape. He urged participants to translate the insights from the conference into actionable outcomes that would redefine logistics and transport practice in Nigeria, thereby advancing the nation’s journey toward sustainable development.
