The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has recorded a significant victory in its intensified campaign against criminal networks, following the arrest of a suspected ammunition courier believed to be linked to bandit operations in Zamfara State. The development has been hailed as a critical disruption to the flow of illegal arms fueling insecurity in the northern region.
The arrest took place on 7th December 2025 at about 3:30 p.m., when operatives of the Command’s Tactical Team stormed the Anguwan Dodo area of Gwagwalada. Acting on what authorities described as “credible and actionable intelligence,” the officers tracked and apprehended the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Ahmed Abubakar of Gusau, Zamfara State.
Investigations revealed that Abubakar had been in active communication with one Yusuf Mohammed, believed to be an associate in a wider network responsible for procuring ammunition for bandits. Police sources say the duo had finalized plans to secure 1,000 rounds of ammunition before security operatives swooped in.
Preliminary findings further indicated that Abubakar was not acting alone. According to investigators, he was dispatched for the illegal operation by his uncle, one Ahmed Yakubu, who is suspected to be a major accomplice in the illicit arms supply chain. Yakubu is currently at large, prompting a manhunt by security agencies.
Police operatives believe that Yakubu has long been involved in facilitating the movement of ammunition from Abuja into bandit-controlled enclaves across Zamfara State. His arrest, authorities say, would help unravel a broader criminal syndicate undermining national security.
The FCT Police Command disclosed that Abubakar had already begun logistical preparations to transport the ammunition before intelligence operatives intercepted the operation. The arrest has reportedly yielded new leads that investigators are now pursuing.
With Abubakar currently in custody, the Command has launched renewed efforts to track down Yusuf Mohammed and the fleeing uncle. Security officials emphasize that dismantling the network is a top priority, given its potential role in enabling violent attacks in the North-West.
Authorities also reiterated their commitment to sustained intelligence-led operations that target the backbone of criminal activities rather than just their foot soldiers. The Command described the arrest as part of a broader crackdown aimed at crippling the supply chains that keep bandit groups armed and active.
The Police used the opportunity to call on residents of the FCT to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or activities promptly. Public support, the Command noted, remains crucial in the ongoing fight against insecurity.
