What began as a routine stop-and-search operation at NNPC Junction along Kubwa Expressway on Sunday evening quickly became the subject of online speculation and false reports.
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has moved to clarify the events after an Instagram blogger, “Mazitundeednut,” alleged that an officer, Lt. Ahmed Yerima, was attacked during the operation.
The Command described the reports as “false and grossly misleading,” stressing that no such attack occurred.
According to the police, the incident took place around 6:15 p.m. on November 16, 2025, when a patrol team noticed a suspicious vehicle.
The vehicle, an ash-coloured Toyota Camry, had a fully concealed number plate and heavily tinted windows.
In line with standard operational procedures, the officers approached the vehicle to request the occupant’s identification and an explanation for the concealments.
Police sources confirmed that the driver refused to comply, rolled up his tinted windows, and made several phone calls, avoiding engagement with the patrol team.
The situation quickly drew attention, prompting three naval personnel to arrive at the scene.
The naval officers identified the occupant as their colleague and were seen taking video and picture footage before departing.
Following confirmation of the occupant’s identity, the police allowed the vehicle to proceed without incident.
“The patrol team then continued their operations peacefully,” a police statement said.
The Command expressed surprise that a routine stop-and-search could be twisted into allegations of assassination.
Residents and social media users had initially reacted with alarm after seeing the viral post, sparking anxiety across the FCT.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Miller Dantawaye, Psc., called on residents to cooperate with officers carrying out their lawful duties.
He warned against sharing unverified news, noting that misinformation can create fear and disrupt public order.
Police also highlighted the professionalism and restraint displayed by officers during the encounter.
The Command clarified that the purpose of stop-and-search operations is to ensure security along major roads and to prevent criminal activities.
Such operations are routine in the FCT, particularly at major junctions and expressways prone to traffic violations or security threats.
