The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory, CP Miller G. Dantawaye, psc, has ordered the immediate redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ushafa Division following a viral video that surfaced online.
The video, which circulated widely on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, showed the DPO slapping a young man during an encounter, sparking outrage among residents and social media users.
In reaction to the development, CP Dantawaye condemned the officer’s behaviour, describing it as highly unprofessional and inconsistent with the ethical standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
He emphasized that the conduct of the officer fell short of the discipline, civility, and respect for human dignity expected of officers serving within the FCT Command.
The Commissioner stated that under his leadership, such acts of misconduct or abuse of authority will not be tolerated, regardless of the rank or position of the erring officer.
Following the incident, the DPO has been redeployed to the State Headquarters, while the Command has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the altercation.
CP Dantawaye assured the public that disciplinary measures will be taken in accordance with police regulations once the investigation is concluded.
He reiterated that accountability and professionalism remain the cornerstone of policing under the current administration of the FCT Command.
The Police Commissioner used the opportunity to remind all Divisional Police Officers and their subordinates to conduct themselves with decorum, restraint, and respect for human rights while performing their duties.
According to him, officers are expected to maintain composure even under provocation, as their primary responsibility is to protect lives, uphold justice, and sustain public trust.
He warned that any police officer found guilty of misconduct, brutality, or abuse of power will face severe disciplinary action, including suspension, demotion, or dismissal.
CP Dantawaye also appealed to members of the public to remain law-abiding, respectful, and cooperative in their interactions with police personnel to foster mutual understanding and effective community policing.
He stressed that mutual respect and cooperation between the police and the people are essential in achieving sustainable peace and public safety within the territory.
