What was meant to be a celebration of life quickly morphed into a showcase of political sparring when former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose confronted former President Olusegun Obasanjo over remarks made at his birthday party.
The glittering event, attended by political heavyweights, philanthropists, and business magnates, was expected to be a night of laughter and camaraderie.
Instead, it became the stage for a public clash that has captured national attention.
Fayose, never one to mince words, took aim at Obasanjo, describing his comments at the party as “irresponsible” and unbecoming of someone of his age and stature.
In a sharply worded letter, Fayose did not hold back.
“Dear Baba Obasanjo, I trust this meets you well. Your coming to my birthday party, I appreciate except for your very irresponsible comments at your age,” he wrote, blending sarcasm with scorn.
The former governor went further, invoking imagery of confinement and restraint: “Someone once said you are supposed to be kept away in the zoo. Sincerely, that’s where you belong.”
Fayose’s message was not just a rebuke of words but of character. He suggested that Obasanjo had crossed a line, implying the former president had “lost his sanity” or entered “the heightened stage of dementia.”
But the jab did not end there. Fayose revealed a financial dispute, demanding the return of money Obasanjo allegedly gave him to attend the birthday event.
“Lastly, I shall appreciate if you return my money since you publicly admitted you received but Dangote brought you back,” Fayose wrote, alluding to the involvement of Nigeria’s business titan Aliko Dangote.
Observers say the letter was a calculated mix of insult, humor, and political theater, designed to assert Fayose’s dominance in a long-running rivalry.
Obasanjo, never one to shy away from a rebuttal, responded succinctly, assuring that the money would be returned.
“Your money has been sent back through Foluso Adeagbo who brought it and in the same bag as he brought it unopened by me,” the former president said, his reply measured yet firm.
He did not spare Fayose in his response, describing the letter as a revelation of “who and what you are, unchanged and unchangeable.”
The exchange highlights the enduring friction between two political titans, whose interactions often oscillate between humor, accusation, and sharp criticism.
Political analysts note that while the world watches for policy and governance battles, personal clashes like this provide a glimpse into the human side of Nigeria’s political elite.
