Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed strong condemnation over reports of an attempted military takeover in the Republic of Benin.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the ECOWAS Commission said it received the news of the alleged coup plot with “consternation,” describing the action as an unconstitutional move and a direct subversion of the will of the Beninese people.
The regional bloc stressed that any attempt to seize power through unlawful means was unacceptable and contrary to democratic principles upheld by member states.
ECOWAS called for the full respect of the Constitution of the Republic of Benin and praised the swift intervention of the country’s government and the Republican Army in restoring calm and bringing the situation under control.
The Commission further warned that the leaders of the plot would be held fully accountable, both individually and collectively, for any loss of lives or damage to property resulting from the attempted takeover.
According to the statement, ECOWAS remains resolute in its commitment to defend democracy, constitutional governance, and the territorial integrity of all member states.
The regional body assured the government and people of Benin of its full support in all necessary forms to safeguard peace and stability in the country.
ECOWAS noted that such support could include the possible deployment of the regional standby force, if required, to defend constitutional order.
The organisation reiterated its zero-tolerance stance for unconstitutional changes of government across West Africa.
The statement was signed by the ECOWAS Commission and dated December 7, 2025, from its headquarters at Yakubu Gowon Crescent, Asokoro District, Abuja.
