An NGO, Doxa Health Foundation on Monday provided free hepatitis treatment to over 1,110 residents of Abuja communities as part of activities marking the 2025 World Hepatitis Day.

According to her, the foundation offered free screenings, vaccinations and treatment referrals for hepatitis B & C
‘We are here at Mogadishu Cantonment, Asokoro, Abuja today to commemorate World Hepatitis Day, recognised by the World Health Organization every July 28.
“As an NGO, we are reaching out to residents here today to provide testing , vaccination if eligible that will enable them to live healthier lives,” she said.
Akawu highlighted the dangers of hepatitis, describing it as a silent killer that often remains undetected until it causes serious liver damage.
“Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. It may be caused by viral infection, alcohol consumption, several health conditions, autoimmune hepatitis. Treatment varies based on the type and underlying cause.
“Hepatitis attacks the liver, a vital organ that performs key functions like detoxification and metabolism.
“Without a healthy liver, the body cannot thrive. That’s why it’s crucial to raise awareness and get tested early,” she said.
The founder said Hepatitis B & C remains a major public health challenge in Nigeria, affecting millions of individuals and presenting significant healthcare implications.
“Shedding light on its prevalence, risk factors, impact on the population, and the urgent
to prevent needless suffering and reduce the burden on the country’s healthcare system.
“In Nigeria, hepatitis B vaccine is highly
need for comprehensive solutions to combat the virus.
“By understanding the gravity of the hepatitis B & C endemic in Nigeria,
stakeholders can join forces to raise awareness, improve screening and vaccination efforts.
“They can also enhance healthcare services endemic, with an estimated 20 to 25 million individuals living with chronic hepatitis B infection,” she said.
The outreach witnessed residents of the cantonment including military personnel receiving free screenings, vaccinations and consultation for hepatitis.
One of the beneficiaries, Grace Adamu thanked the NGO for bringing the vaccination to the cantonment as the vaccine is always unavailable.
“I’m very happy to have you here in our community. The screening and vaccination will definitely have a big impact on my people. Thank you,” she said
