The atmosphere at Cadbury Nigeria Plc has been filled with solemn reflection and gratitude as the company paid glowing tribute to one of its most revered leaders, Dr. Christopher Kolade, who passed away recently at the age of 92.
For the management and staff of the company, Dr. Kolade’s death marks the end of an era — one defined by vision, integrity, and selfless service to both the organisation and the nation. His name, synonymous with excellence, continues to echo through the company’s corridors and corporate memory.
In a heartfelt statement, Cadbury Nigeria — a subsidiary of Mondelēz International, one of the world’s largest snacking companies — described Dr. Kolade as an “accomplished corporate colossus, distinguished diplomat, and intellectual giant.” To many within and beyond Cadbury, those words barely capture the depth of his influence.
As the company’s first indigenous Managing Director, Dr. Kolade set new standards in corporate leadership at a time when few Nigerians had broken through to the top ranks of multinational firms. His tenure redefined professionalism, discipline, and ethical management in ways that would guide the company’s culture for decades.
The Chairman of Cadbury Nigeria, Mr. Adedotun Sulaiman, captured the collective sentiment when he said, “The Board, Management, and Staff of Cadbury Nigeria join the family of Dr. Kolade — and indeed Nigerians — to mourn the passing of one of the finest administrators our country has ever produced.”
Sulaiman recalled that Dr. Kolade played a crucial role in the company’s transformation, guiding it through years of growth, stability, and innovation. “He contributed immensely to the development of Nigeria’s human capital in various capacities. While we will miss him greatly, we are comforted by the enviable legacies he left behind,” he added.
To the current Managing Director, Mrs. Oyeyimika Adeboye, Dr. Kolade was more than a corporate legend; he was a mentor and moral compass. She described him as “a stickler for discipline, a symbol of corporate governance, and an advocate of strong ethical leadership.”
Adeboye fondly recalled how Cadbury Nigeria chose to honour him earlier in the year during the company’s 60th anniversary celebration. “We began our diamond jubilee with a fireside chat with Dr. Kolade as a mark of honour,” she said. “The Cadbury Nigeria Alumni Association Annual Lecture is named after him, and a road within our corporate headquarters bears his name. His legacy is quite literally part of our foundation.”
Dr. Kolade’s story within Cadbury Nigeria began in 1978, when he joined the company and quickly rose through the ranks. His combination of calm leadership, clarity of purpose, and unwavering ethics earned him deep respect from colleagues and contemporaries alike.
After a remarkable career at Cadbury, he retired in 2002, leaving behind an organisation that had been deeply shaped by his values. That same year, he began another chapter in public service — this time as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, a position he held until 2007.
Yet, even beyond diplomacy, Dr. Kolade found purpose in shaping minds. He joined the faculty of the Lagos Business School (LBS) and the School of Media and Communications (SMC), both of which are part of Pan-Atlantic University. At LBS, he taught courses in Corporate Governance and Human Resource Management, while at SMC, he guided students through Leadership and Conflict Management.
His passion for learning and teaching saw him take up key academic leadership roles. He served as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Pan-Atlantic University and later as Chancellor of McPherson University, Ogun State. His influence in academia mirrored the integrity and foresight that marked his corporate career.
