The Cross River State Chapter Chairman of the Association of Professional Women Engineers, Engr. Eme Nyah Enoh has called on Parents and Guardians of the state indigenes to encourage their female Children to venture into the study of sciences to enable them study Engineering as a career in higher Institutions of learning.
This assertion was made in Calabar while speaking at a public lecture to mark the inauguration of the 5th Chapter Executive Committee of the body where she revealed that women Children of the state origin can Excel in the engineering profession just like their males counter parts.
She also used to opportunity to dismissed the earliest notions held by most parents in the past that women engineers only end up arranging files the office.
He also debunked the false hood believe that women often work in office if they studies engineering career in higher Institutions of learning, rather, she declared that, “I am a Civil engineer, I don’t work in the office as alleged even if she study Engineering.
She used the opportunity to share her story on how she became an engineer saying, “my passion for engineering began in JSS (ii) when I flipped through the pages of a magazine and saw a picture of a woman fully kitted with an helmet and Engineering attire and I suddenly failed in Love with that dressing and then ask the question to know what it will take to become like her.
Engr. Enoh declared that she honestly encourage young girls to study sciences to enable them pursue engineering career and this would assist her to work until she gets to the zenith of her career, adding that, “engineering is a very good profession that is not exclusively reserved for men”.
She used the opportunity to share her achievements, claiming that, “I bought my first car when I was an engineering student. That is how powerful engineering is. When you study engineering, don’t just float, know the nitty gritty of the profession”.
On what motivated her to seek for the Chairman of APWEN, Engr. Enoh declared that it was her desires to move the association of women engineers forward and add value to it in the state and take it to a higher level than my predecessors left it.
Also speaking is the immediate past Chairman of the association, Engineer MRS. Faith Edu-Itam indicated that it was necessary at this point to initiate for giving an opportunity to the “girls child to take engineering as a profession can break that stereotype that engineering is meant for only men”, she added.
For the job opportunities, she explained that as a student of engineering, there would be multiple and fast opening for you to choose from if you know what you are doing because designs of many types will come to you.
Speaking earlier is the Acting Head, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), and guests Speaker in the Public lecture, Engr. Dr. Nkpa Ogarekpe spoke on the theme: “The Impact of Climate change on rainfall intensity: implications on Urban Flooding within Calabar Metropolis”, urged the hydraulic engineers to factor in impact of Climate change during the designing stage to avoid failure.
