The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc minps PhD, today received members of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Awka Branch, and the Human Rights Committee of the Association at the State Police Command Headquarters, Awka.
The meeting was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration between the Police and the legal profession in promoting justice, safeguarding human rights, and enhancing public confidence in the criminal justice system.
CP Orutugu welcomed the delegation and expressed appreciation for the NBA’s continuous partnership and advocacy in upholding the rule of law.
He described the relationship between the Police and lawyers as a strategic alliance vital for ensuring effective justice delivery and protecting citizens’ rights.
The Commissioner emphasized the Anambra State Police Command’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights in all operations.
He particularly highlighted oversight functions such as regular cell visits and pro bono services to suspects as examples of the Command’s dedication to lawful conduct.
“Ensuring that all duties are performed in accordance with the law is central to our operations and the protection of human rights,” CP Orutugu said.
The NBA delegation included the Chairman of the Awka Branch and the Chairperson of the Committee on Human Rights, who commended the Police Command for its open-door policy.
They noted that under CP Orutugu’s leadership, the Command has made significant strides in improving Police-Citizen relations across the state.
The delegation reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to collaborating with the Police on training programs focused on human rights and legal standards.
They also expressed readiness to participate in public sensitization campaigns aimed at educating citizens about their rights and responsibilities.
The delegation further offered to support the Police in mediation efforts and dispute resolution, particularly in cases involving human rights concerns.
CP Orutugu welcomed these initiatives, describing them as essential to fostering trust between law enforcement and the community.
The meeting concluded with a mutual pledge to maintain continuous engagement and dialogue between the Police and the legal community.
Signed statements from the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the collaboration is part of the Command’s long-term strategy to enhance transparency, accountability, and public confidence in policing.
