The Anambra State Police Command has paid glowing tribute to late journalist, Mr. Alphonsus Nweze, describing his death as a great loss to the media and security community in the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, minps, PhD, expressed the Command’s heartfelt condolences to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Anambra State Correspondents’ Chapel.
Mr. Nweze, who was a senior correspondent with Apex News online publication, reportedly died in a fatal road accident along the Onitsha–Asaba Expressway on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
The Command, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the late journalist was known for his professionalism, courage, and commitment to factual reporting.
According to the statement, Mr. Nweze’s passing has created a huge vacuum in the state’s media landscape, particularly among journalists covering the security and governance beats.
CP Orutugu described the late reporter as a man of integrity whose stories often reflected balance, accuracy, and a deep concern for justice and public order.
He recalled that Mr. Nweze’s consistent engagement with the Police Command over the years demonstrated his dedication to truth, accountability, and police-community collaboration.
“The Command acknowledges Mr. Nweze as a diligent and fair-minded journalist whose work contributed immensely to shaping public understanding of security developments in Anambra State,” CP Orutugu stated.
He noted that the late journalist went beyond daily reportage to advocate responsible journalism and promote peacebuilding efforts in the state.
Colleagues of the deceased, particularly members of the Correspondents’ Chapel, described him as humble, principled, and fearless in the pursuit of truth, even under challenging conditions.
They recounted his unwavering commitment to ethical journalism and his willingness to mentor younger reporters across the state.
The Police Command observed that the late journalist’s death is not only a personal tragedy for his family but also a professional loss to the Nigerian media industry.
CP Orutugu urged journalists in Anambra State to honor Mr. Nweze’s memory by upholding the values of fairness, integrity, and truth that he consistently embodied.
The Commissioner prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul and asked God to comfort his family, colleagues, and friends during this period of grief.
