The Anambra State Police Command has expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran journalist, Mr. Alphonsus Nweze, who lost his life in a fatal road accident last week.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, minps, PhD, extended heartfelt condolences to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Anambra State Correspondents Chapel over the sad incident.
Mr. Nweze, a seasoned reporter with Apex News online publication, was involved in a fatal crash along the Onitsha–Asaba Expressway on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
According to the statement from the Command, the late journalist’s death has created a deep void in the media community, particularly among reporters covering the security beat in Anambra State.
The Commissioner of Police described Mr. Nweze as a courageous, diligent, and fair-minded professional whose reports contributed immensely to public enlightenment and accountability.
He noted that the late journalist’s consistent engagement with the Police Command reflected his commitment to promoting accuracy, transparency, and mutual understanding between the police and the public.
“The Command acknowledges Mr. Nweze as a reporter of integrity whose work helped shape public understanding of security developments in Anambra State,” CP Orutugu said.
He added that beyond routine reporting, the journalist used his platform to promote responsible journalism, civic education, and peacebuilding in the state.
The Commissioner emphasized that Mr. Nweze’s approach to journalism was guided by truth and objectivity, values that earned him respect across law enforcement circles and the wider public.
Colleagues of the deceased described him as a humble and principled reporter who remained steadfast in his pursuit of the truth, even under challenging circumstances.
Members of the Anambra State Correspondents Chapel also expressed shock over his passing, describing it as both a personal and professional tragedy.
They noted that Mr. Nweze’s contributions to the media landscape in Anambra State would continue to inspire younger journalists for years to come.
The Police Command stressed that his death is a painful loss to both the journalism profession and the entire state, given his years of dedication to credible reporting.
CP Orutugu prayed for the peaceful repose of Mr. Nweze’s soul and for divine comfort upon his family, friends, and professional colleagues during this period of grief.
The statement, signed by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, Awka, concluded that the Command stands in solidarity with the NUJ and all journalists mourning the passing of one of their finest members.
