The Anambra State Police Command has intensified its clampdown on sexual crimes, arraigning four suspects in connection with separate cases of defilement. The suspects were brought before the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Court sitting in Awka on Wednesday, 20th August 2025.
The arraignment underscores the growing determination of security agencies in Anambra to confront the rising tide of gender-based violence and protect vulnerable groups, especially minors, from exploitation and abuse.
According to the Police Command, the four accused persons were apprehended following thorough investigations into individual complaints lodged at different divisions across the state. Each case, though separate, carried the weight of trauma inflicted on children whose lives have been deeply affected.
When brought before the court, the suspects were arraigned on charges bordering on the violation of child rights and the sexual exploitation of minors. The offences, under Nigerian law, attract severe punishment if proven beyond reasonable doubt.
Following their arraignment, the presiding judge ordered that the suspects be remanded at the Correctional Centre pending further hearings. The decision, legal experts say, is consistent with ensuring the victims are shielded from intimidation while the court process runs its full course.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc MNIPS PhD, who confirmed the development, reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance stance against sexual offences. He stressed that protecting children and other vulnerable persons remains a top priority for the Command.
“The protection of minors is non-negotiable,” CP Orutugu said. “Anyone caught in the heinous act of defilement will face the full wrath of the law. Such crimes will never go unpunished under my watch.”
He further assured the public that the Police Command is not only committed to prosecuting offenders but also strengthening collaboration with relevant agencies and civil society organizations to ensure victims receive adequate care and justice.
Observers note that the establishment of the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Court in Awka has significantly improved the speed and sensitivity with which such cases are treated, sparing survivors the trauma of long-drawn-out legal delays.
Child rights advocates have welcomed the latest arraignment, describing it as a deterrent to others who may attempt to prey on minors. They also called on communities to be more vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly to law enforcement agencies.
Statistics from rights organizations indicate that cases of sexual violence against minors remain underreported due to stigma, fear of reprisal, and lack of awareness about legal remedies. The Police Command, however, has continued to encourage victims and guardians to break the silence.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, emphasized in his statement that the Anambra Police Command will not relent in investigating, arresting, and prosecuting offenders, no matter how highly placed they may be.
He urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to remain watchful, stressing that safeguarding children requires a joint effort between the police and the public.
With the arraignment of the four suspects, the Anambra Police Command has once again sent a clear message: defilement and gender-based violence will meet uncompromising justice in the state.
