The Department of Philosophy, Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), rolled out the drums yesterday evening in Abak Local Government Area to honour one of their own, Prof. Iniobong Umotong, following his appointment as the institution’s new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).
The event, which drew together academic staff and postgraduate students of the department, was described as a celebration of merit, dedication, and selfless service.
In his address, Prof. Umotong expressed profound gratitude to his colleagues and students for their steadfast support throughout his academic journey. He emphasized the importance of unity and peace as key drivers of institutional growth.
“Peace is deliberate, and so is conflict,” he said. “We must choose peace at all times. Whenever there are issues, let us resolve them through dialogue rather than conflict. I also urge us to be mindful of what we share about the university on social media. Let us not allow misinformation or unnecessary petitions to discredit our institution.”
The new DVC drew biblical and philosophical illustrations to underscore his message, recalling that leaders like David and Joseph were raised by God from humble beginnings to serve the greater good. “I believe God places people in positions not for themselves but for the benefit of others,” he said. “Sacrifice for the collective good always attracts divine reward.”
The Head of Department, Dr. Christopher Udofia, described the appointment as a historic moment for the department, likening him to a “philosopher-king” and a voice at the heart of the university, he noting that the faculty had long yearned for a stronger voice in university governance.
“Before now, philosophy did not have a voice in AKSU,” Dr. Udofia recalled. “But today, by God’s grace, we have become a voice in the entire university through the appointment of a philosopher-king as Deputy Vice-Chancellor. It is a thing of joy.”
Other members of staff also paid glowing tributes to Prof. Umotong.
Dr. Rev. Moses Udoh, Coordinator of Postgraduate Studies, Obio Akpa Campus, said the appointment was well-deserved, adding: “Prof. Umotong’s elevation is by merit. He has distinguished himself through hard work and integrity. We are proud of him, and we look forward to even greater heights, including the office of Vice-Chancellor in the future.”
Associate Professor Precious Obioha, a former Head of Department of Philosophy, said he owes his career to Prof. Umotong’s fairness. “When I applied as a lecturer, I knew no one, but he looked at my credentials and recommended me. That single act brought me into the university system. When he was Dean of Arts, he always spoke for the welfare of all departments, I was the HOD then so I’m speaking from experience standpoint, not just his department. He is a selfless leader.”
Dr. Inameti Udo, another lecturer in the department, described the appointment as an answered prayer. “There is time for everything, and this is our time,” he said. “Prof. Umotong is a man who always stands for truth and justice. His leadership is a blessing to us all, and we are grateful to witness this moment.”
In their goodwill messages, on behalf of post graduate students, Dr. Itohowo Ignatius Paul who recently bagged his PhD, said Prof Iniobong umotong had been his supervisor right from the undergraduate days till he defended his PhD, like other tributes he agreed that Prof. Umotong’s humility, mentorship, and concern for the welfare of others made him the right choice for the office.
They all congratulated him and pledged their unalloyed support throughout his tenure.
Responding to the tributes, Prof. Umotong reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of the university community. “Your encouragement strengthens me,” he told his colleagues.
“I promise to serve with integrity, fairness, and a commitment to the growth of our institution. With unity and peace, we can achieve much more.”
The evening ended with a vote of thanks and a pledge of loyalty from Dr Inameti Udo, who described the DVC’s elevation as an inspiration to academic aspirations.
Prof. Umotong, a seasoned academic and administrator, was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) by the Senate of Akwa Ibom State University at its 113th meeting on August 27, 2025.
Before his new role, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and had been instrumental in the growth of both the Religious Studies and Philosophy Departments.
His appointment has been widely hailed within the academic community as well-deserved recognition of his years of dedication, leadership, and commitment to excellence.
