At least ten people have lost their lives while eleven others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a fatal road crash along the Obajana–Lokoja highway in Kogi State.
The accident occurred at about 11:30 p.m. on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Apamaru, near Obajana, involving a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number KTG 100YL.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the vehicle was conveying 21 male passengers when the incident happened.
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC crash investigation team revealed that the crash was caused by excessive speeding and wrongful overtaking by the driver, who lost control of the bus during a night journey.
Ten passengers were confirmed dead on the spot, while eleven others sustained serious injuries, including deep cuts, fractures, and bruises.
The injured victims were rushed to Fisayo Hospital, Obajana, for medical treatment, while the remains of the deceased were released to their families for burial according to Islamic rites at Sarikin Hausawa, Obajana.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and extended condolences to the families of the deceased.
He decried the persistent cases of fatal accidents linked to night travel, speeding, and reckless overtaking, describing them as recurring threats to road safety across the country.
Mohammed urged commercial drivers to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and avoid risky behaviours that could endanger passengers’ lives.
He disclosed that the Corps would intensify enforcement against overloading and continue nationwide advocacy to discourage night journeys on high-risk routes.
The FRSC boss also called on passengers to be more vigilant and proactive in ensuring their safety during trips.
He said passengers have a civic duty to caution or report any driver engaging in dangerous driving, stressing that silence in the face of recklessness amounts to complicity in tragedy.
Mohammed reminded motorists and passengers alike that road safety is a collective responsibility requiring shared vigilance and discipline.
He encouraged members of the public to promptly report reckless drivers by dialing the FRSC toll-free number 122 or by alerting the nearest FRSC patrol team or any available security agency along the route.
The Corps Marshal reaffirmed FRSC’s commitment to reducing road crashes nationwide through intensified enforcement, sensitisation, and community collaboration.
